Complete the initial team formation criteria weight survey Links to an external site. to suggest how the CATME tool should weigh the “about you” questions for team formation. Think about what would make a good team in the course by reading the project guide, thinking about your own prior team experiences, and conducting online research about what makes a good design team. The weights determine how CATME will group students based on their responses to the questions in the “about you” survey. The weights range from 1 (group by dissimilar responses) to 9 (group by similar responses); with 5 telling the algorithm to ignore that question. There is a separate weight assigned for each question that was presented in the "about you" survey.
A weight further toward an endpoint tells the algorithm to more strongly prefer that end point label. For example, for programming experience, a weight of 4 means that you want the algorithm to weakly group students with dissimilar programming experience onto the same team; whereas a weight of 1 tells the algorithm to strongly prefer this outcome. Weights in the other direction are analogous: 6 tells the algorithm to weakly group students with similar programming experience whereas 9 tells the algorithm to strongly prefer this outcome.
It's best to minimize the total number of questions (weights not equal to 5) that the algorithm must consider. It's also best to set the weights to determine relative importance of the individual questions on the "about you" survey; i.e., you want to assign the magnitude closest to an end point label (e.g., 1 if grouping by dissimilar responses or 9 if grouping by similar responses) for the question that you believe is the most important for team formation, the second highest magnitude for the next most important question and so on. Please note that CATME actually uses a [-5, 5] scale but we adapted the scale to [1, 9] for this assignment. All discussions should use the [1, 9] scale as described.
For this assignment, you are asked to make initial selections for the criteria weights in the survey. You can review a summary of the weights in the survey at anytime. The survey will also e-mail you a copy of the selections that you made after submission. Keep this message for later reference. In two subsequent assignments, you will have an opportunity to discuss the weights with your peers and complete new instances of the same criteria weight survey as a way to revise your initial selections.
