Stereotypes and Implicit Bias
Learning Goals:
- Intersectionality is “a metaphor for understanding the ways that multiple forms of inequality or disadvantage sometimes compound themselves and they create obstacles" (Crenshaw, 2018 Links to an external site.)
- When compared to non-engineering disciplines, CS is an outlier in the low rates of participation of women.
- Research shows that stereotypes can affect how we evaluate others.
- Research studies have shown that, on average, people who rated an identical resume rated it more positively if the name on the resume was a typically man’s name than if it was a typically women’s name.
- Research found that women who stayed and left engineering were very similar, but the women who had left engineering had been in environments that were less supportive.
