Intention vs Impact

Learning Goals:

  1. We might have a positive intent and not mean to offend anyone, but our words might still have a negative impact on others.
  2. Thinking about our potential impact before we speak can be a way of showing kindness to others, because we don’t want to offend them.
  3. It is important to learn about the historical context of words, because history creates meaning that might not be obvious and can shape the impact words have on others.
  4. Someone saying "I don't see race" might make someone feel like you're denying a person of color's racial/ethnic experience.
