Student Feedback and Wellness

Learning Goals:

  1. When students complain about the class
    • It is normal to feel defensive.
    • Try to understand their perspective by listening/reading carefully and asking follow-up questions.
    • Empathize with students.
    • Use their feedback to help improve the course.
    • Do not gossip or talk negatively about students who are complaining. Their feedback is valuable.
    • Do not try to figure out who posted a particular post on social media. You can invite them to contact you.
  2. We all have mental health and it is as important as our physical health.
  3. “Everyday feelings come and go and are a normal reaction to what is happening in our lives. They are always changing and don't usually hang around for too long. Overwhelming feelings hang around for a long time, change the way we feel and behave and may stop us from doing what we want in life. You might have heard people call them a mental health problem, mental illness or mental disorder.” (Source: https://www.annafreud.org/media/8017/wahmh-lesson-powerpoint-final.pdf Links to an external site.)
  4. If you come across a classmate whose behavior concerns you, whether in regards to their well-being or yours, we encourage you to refer this behavior to the Student Assistance Center (1-217-333-0050) or online at https://odos.illinois.edu/community-of-care/referral . Based upon your report, staff in the Student Assistance Center reaches out to students to make sure they have the support they need to be healthy and safe.
  5. The Counseling Center and McKinley Health Center have additional resources.
