Homework(HW) Grading Policy

  1. PrairieLearn (PL)-based HW
    1. Students can get 100% if they complete the HW by the deadline. PL-based HWs are auto-graded.
    2. If students do not complete the homework by the due date, they can still receive up to 50% credit on the homework if they complete it by the last day of instruction. In other words, late homework submissions get 50% credit.
    • Please note that you need to try each question more than one time to get full points on that question. When answering questions on PrairieLearn, pay attention to the "Awarded Points" in the Question box on the right-side panel. Keep trying (try a new variant), on the question panel, until you get the full Awarded points.
  1. Gradescope-based HWs (these are analytical questions that require students to draw pictures, flow-chart, do calculations and sometimes need to write a short paragraph, which is difficult to evaluate in the auto-grading environment) have two submissions (First Attempt and Corrections) policy. First attempt and Correction scores are averaged to calculate the final score in a Gradescope-based HW. Gradescope submission guidelines Download Gradescope submission guidelines
    • Note: the first attempts are graded on correctness. After the first attempt's due date, the answer key is posted on Canvas. We want students to correct the problems (that they did wrong on their first attempt) and submit the corrections (not just the correct answer but explain what you did wrong on the first attempt submission). The correction is due a week from the first attempt. Also, note that the corrections should be based on the problems that you did wrong in the first attempt (i.e. we do not accept the corrections without the first attempt submission). Do not wait for the first attempt to be graded. You can submit your corrections after the solution is posted. The solution will be posted immediately after the due date. By submitting the correction in the second attempt you can get a full score for the second attempt. However, your final score for the HW will be an average of both the first and second attempt scores. If you do not submit corrections, your second attempt score will be the same as the first attempt score so your final score will be the same as that in the first attempt.
  1. Some HWs have both PL and Gradescope Parts. Each will carry weight proportionally according to the number of questions and level of difficulty. PL and Gradescope scores will be combined to get a score in a (PL+Gradescope) - based HW.
  2. Policy on the use of Generative AI. Students may use generative AI tools like ChatGPT for coursework, provided they follow these guidelines: Properly cite the AI tool used, including the version and date. Clearly indicate which parts of the work were generated by AI through appropriate citations. Ensure that the work reflects personal understanding and analysis, as plagiarism, including uncredited AI-generated content, is prohibited. Use AI tools responsibly and ethically, in line with academic integrity policies. If students are unsure about how to use or cite AI tools, they should seek guidance from the instructor.
  3. Policy on adhering to the Homework/Lab Template. Students must strictly follow the homework/lab template provided on Canvas/GitHub. Failure to do so may result in a penalty affecting the assignment grade. For any questions, contact the instructor before the deadline.
