Legal Responsibilities
Learning Goals:
- You cannot share grade data or graded work with anyone that doesn’t need to know (i.e., anyone other than the student or course staff that needs to know).
- You should not talk about grades in public places where other people can easily overhear your conversation. Course staff for other courses are not in the need to know category (i.e., you cannot share any of your students’ grades with them).
- You cannot leave graded work in public places.
- If a student reports an incident of sexual misconduct to you, you should:
- Be supportive and listen.
- Tell them that you are required to report what you know to the Title IX office.
- Share information with them about the Title IX office and confidential resources (e.g., https://wecare.illinois.edu/resources/students/)
Please watch the following three videos.
The first video was made for TAs at Michigan State University (MSU). It mentions a few things that are specific to MSU, but the non-MSU specific information is the most important content in the video and it applies here at UIUC. Similarly, the second video has scenarios that are relevant to us at UIUC, but the specific links they provide are not.
The third video references the following UIUC document: https://web.archive.org/web/20210831004134/https://wecare.illinois.edu/docs/Responsible-Employees-Resource-v3.pdf Links to an external site.
