1.6 Managing Files

Overview

All of the files you use, including imported items and any files created within Canvas, will be stored in the Files section of your course. In most instances, this area is not visible to students or included on the navigation menu, although there may be exceptions. We've hidden the Files section from students in this course by removing it from the main course menu to the left.

The Files view in your course will look similar to the screenshot below. If you plan to directly import a large number of files, consider creating a directory structure to keep things organized. Uploaded files will be imported into the currently selected directory. If you import a course from another LMS, the directories will be automatically re-created based on the structure of your imported course. The Files video near the bottom of this page provides more details.

File Display Options

Canvas can upload and display a wide variety of file formats including  PDFs, PowerPoints, and Word Docs. By default, these files will be displayed as course links (like this one:  Download Improving Learning Effectiveness Spring 2021.pptx

), or they can be presented in an in-line format, like the example below. To display an in-line file, click on any file link while in edit mode to open the Link Options panel shown below.

link option dialogue box showing how to set a file to preview inline with page content

Select Preview Inline to display the file within the page content, check the Expand preview by Default option and your document should appear like the one shown here.
